TV shows are being intentionally created for you to watch them in the background.

    1. That’s how Latin American soap operas have always been. The actors narrate what they are doing so that viewers can follow along without watching the screen, while housewives go about their chores.

    2. The en-shit-ification of story telling…

If the story isn’t shit people will put their phone down to pay attention to it. The problem is that most modern writing that gets put on screen is awful trash that people don’t find interesting.

    3. All of society’s being sloppified and shittified. Cultivate real relationships with genuine people while you still can.

While I hate this, I also get it. I’m currently commenting on Reddit while eating lunch, with an NFL commentary show running in the background because I live alone/WFH and it creates an atmosphere of being around people.

Makes me wonder if the WFH trend isn’t part of this and people needing background social comfort.

    5. If someone really wants to trigger the hell out of me then they should watch a movie and periodically look down at their phone or a meal without pausing.

    6. This isn’t anything new. TV shows have been developed since the 70s to be completed while your back is turned and still know what’s going on. Especially primetime series.

There are plenty of cerebral shows, but they don’t draw as wide of audiences cause they take too much attention for most viewers.

Attention distraction might have made it worse, but “kitchen” shows have been a thing since multiple TVs in a house have been.

    7. This has always been like this. Just watch any network show like Law & Order.
It didn’t used to be because of phones but so you can be doing the dishes in the other room and follow along.

    8. Andor certainly and thankfully doesnt fall into this. I had to watch it twice, the second time with subtitles on and still if distracted for 20 seconds I had to go back. Best TV since GoT

    9. Also comprehension, our lack of reading has kneecapped the average persons comprehension.

I don’t watch many modern shows but you can see this in the Better Call Saul sub. Every once in a while someone will ask a question that just shouts “I was looking at my phone the whole time!!”

It’s annoying. Like, don’t barely pay attention and then ask others to fill in the blanks for you.

And they also have to show the entire movie in the trailer so people know what they’re getting into

Can someone give me the TLDW of this clip? I was distracted watching my TV show and missed what she said.

    13. To be fair, tv writing being complicated enough that you *couldn’t* follow along while on your phone is a relatively new thing
